Understanding Narcissistic & Emotional Abuse

Narcissistic abuse is a term often used to describe patterns of emotional or psychological mistreatment involving manipulation, control and repeated disregard for another person's feelings or boundaries.

It can occur in romantic relationships, families, friendships and workplaces. Sometimes the behaviour develops gradually, making it difficult to recognise what is happening or understand why you feel increasingly uncertain about yourself.

Recognising the Signs of Narcissistic Abuse

Every experience is different, but common patterns may include:

Gaslighting

Being made to question your memories, feelings or perception of events.

Emotional manipulation

Feeling blamed, guilty or responsible for another person's behaviour.

Persistent criticism

Experiencing comments that gradually undermine your confidence or self-worth.

Controlling behaviour

Feeling unable to express your needs, make decisions or maintain personal boundaries.

Unpredictable affection

Experiencing alternating periods of closeness, criticism or emotional withdrawal.

Isolation

Feeling increasingly disconnected from friends, family or other sources of support.

You do not need to know whether someone has narcissistic personality disorder to recognise the impact of their behaviour or seek support.

HOW NARCISSISTIC ABUSE CAN AFFECT YOUR WELLBEING

Experiencing emotional abuse can affect how you see yourself, approach relationships and respond to everyday situations.

You may experience anxiety, low mood, emotional exhaustion, guilt or difficulty trusting your own judgement. Some women describe feeling disconnected from their identity or constantly questioning whether their thoughts and feelings are valid.

These effects can continue long after a difficult relationship has ended.

How Counselling Can Support Your Recovery

Recovering from narcissistic abuse is a personal process, and there is no fixed timeline for healing.

Through individual counselling and psychotherapy, we can explore your experiences at a pace that feels right for you. Depending on your circumstances, our sessions may focus on:

Understanding patterns of emotional manipulation and control

Exploring difficult feelings, including guilt, grief, anger and shame

Rebuilding self-esteem, confidence and self-worth

Recognising and establishing healthier personal boundaries

Reconnecting with your identity, needs and values

Developing greater trust in your own feelings and decisions

My integrative approach allows our work to be tailored to your individual experiences rather than following a fixed recovery programme.

You can learn more about my therapeutic approach and the support I offer on my counselling and psychotherapy services page.

RECOVERING FROM DIFFICULT RELATIONSHIPS & FAMILY EXPERIENCES

Whether the narcissistic individual is a family member, your boss or someone from a past relationship, the emotional impact can be significant.

You may still be in contact with the person, considering changes to a relationship or trying to make sense of experiences from your past.

Counselling provides a supportive space to explore these circumstances without pressure to make particular decisions.

If you are also navigating separation, divorce or recurring relationship difficulties, my relationship counselling for women may be helpful.
